Beyond Scaling Up: A workshop

In May 2010 a workshop was held at the Institute of Development Studies as part of the work on Beyond Scaling Up: Pathways to Universal Access.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Explore approaches that have fostered innovation, rapid learning and large scale impact in the health sector that incorporate context and social arrangements as central to learning and change and
  • Identify practical approaches for collaboration between innovators, researchers, governments
and funding agencies to strengthen the capacity of health systems to meet the needs of the poor.

The meeting covered topics including; experiences with large scale health interventions, local innovations, new information communications technologies, citizen/health system interactions and building an evidence base to take this work forward.

A set of briefings that summarise the discussions that were had at the meeting will be available soon. The first briefing introduces the STEPS Centre “pathways approach” for responding to challenges in a complex and dynamic world and the Future Health Systems take on the management of change in complex health systems.
