Bringing Smiles to Midwives in Uganda

Future Health Systems is a research consortium working to improve access, affordability and quality of health services for the poor. We are a partnership of leading research institutes from across the globe working in a variety of contexts: in low-income countries (Bangladesh, Uganda), middle-income countries (China, India) and fragile states (Afghanistan) to build resilient health systems for the future. After a successful first five-year phase from 2006-2011 (see our success stories), we are entering a new six-year phase of research, funded mainly by UK aid.

Bringing Smiles to Midwives in Uganda

Future Health Systems

A simple initiative of recognising best performing health workers has brought smiles to the faces of midwives in the eastern Uganda districts of Kamuli, Pallisa and Kibuku.

The initiative, which started last year under the Maternal and Neonatal Implementation for Equitable Systems Study (MANIFEST), sees the three best performing health workers and health facilities recognised at the bi annual health workers symposium in each of the three districts.

The awards comprise a certificate and a solar light kit. Ms Anek Santurinah, a midwife at Kameke Health Centre in Pallisa District says the solar lamps have always come in handy at their facility where the maternity ward is yet to be connected to the electricity grid.

“We are no longer using candles and the little lights on our little cell phones. Life is a bit easy nowadays,” says Santurinah whose health centre sees most of the mothers delivering in the night.
