Despite global recommendations celebrating community health interventions, little is known about the community capabilities that underpin them. Four studies will be presented that assess community capability and transform such understanding into locally owned and sustained action: (i) a global systematic review of community capability; (ii) a participatory assessment of community voice in South Africa; (iii) a mixed methods study detailing how informal and formal media act as key community stakeholders for child health in India; and (iv) participatory action research that builds capacity to improve maternal and newborn health in Uganda.
