New frontiers in advancing gender analysis in health systems research: Context-embedded approaches, intersectionality and engagement with power and ethics

  • Roof Terrace, CTICC 1 Lower Long St Cape Town, WC, 8000 South Africa

This session aims to elicit interest in methodological approaches that expand gender in health systems research beyond conventional efforts that focus narrowly on women or disaggregate data by sex. Presentations will illustrate three approaches that advance gender analysis: context-embedded research (gender relations in the context of voucher programmes in Uganda and HIV vulnerability in Malawian fishing communities); intersectionality (the interplay of gender, age, poverty and education in shaping access to Indian maternal health schemes and use of ICT in Bangladesh); and gender, power and ethics (participatory research in Kenya).

Moderator:

  • Sally Theobald, Reader in Social Science and International Health, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom

FHS Participants:

  • Tamanna Sharmin, Senior Research Investigator, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), Bangladesh - Discussant
