About the Future Health Systems consortium

Overview

The purpose of Future Health Systems is to generate knowledge that shapes health systems to benefit the world's poor. Future Health Systems addresses fundamental questions about the design of health systems and works closely with people who are leading the transformation of health systems in their own countries. We bring together policy-makers from influential countries with leading public health and development research institutions to understand and test:

  • Methods of financing health that account for patterns of poverty and vulnerability and new approaches to social protection;
  • Innovative strategies to improve access to competent public or private health services in contexts where relationships between providers, government, civil society and users are changing rapidly;
  • New ways of linking research to policy processes at local, national and global levels.

Research and Management

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) based in Baltimore, USA, is leading the management of Future Health Systems. David Peters is the director, and Hafiz Rahman is the research manager.

Advisory and steering groups

An International Advisory Panel has been convened to provide technical oversight to review study purpose, design, and results at an international level, as well as in each country through National Advisory Panels.

Funding

The Future Health Systems consortium is a five year programme of research work funded by the UK Department for International Development.

Communications

The communications activities for the programme are managed by Samantha Reddin based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in collaboration with FHS communications group members from partner countries.
